I Let All My Dreams Die

I watch the world from different perspectives,

Saw skies bloom from the sea

And Atlantis drown from acidic angles,

Thought that I’d do that thing,

Yknow, what everyone said I should do

What I would be good at,

Structure and things all good writers should use

I can accomplish and aspire and rise

I will rise

I will rise to the surface

But the closest I’ve got to swimming is letting my eyes burn in an over flowing bathtub,

I will rise,

I will rise to the top

But I’m smoke from a candle too close to a smoke detector, and you’re all water drops falling from the top and taking me down with you

Thought I’d always do that thing

Metaphors and similes

Figurative language just to tell you that I let all my dreams die because the burden of society and the thought of speaking to another human being was too much for me

I let all my dreams die because the pressure to touch another human’s flesh and become the poster child for “when I grow up I want to be” was too much for me

I let my dreams die because questions about marriage and children and church, and why am I unclean and unholy and where is a man to look after me is too much for me

I let my dreams die because I want to live in the trees and know what my soul feels like when it feels free, and breathe under stars that don’t mind my business, that is enough for me

I don’t need to lie or hide behind words you can’t understand, because telling you why I let my dreams die is as hard for you to hear as it is easy for me to say

I let my dreams die because dreaming got in the way
