Agreeing Who gets the Accolade

Drawing short straws of austerity,
Safe in the knowledge it won’t affect us,
We will always have our education to fall back on,
And the friends that we made in time,
Handshakes and back slapping abound,
No matter what is achieved,
We can only be judged by a deity,
Like that worshipped by distant cousins,
Who create our wealth for us,
We really must thank them one day,
If only it was our way, our will,
For we move in much larger circles now,
Untrusting of our friends, we spy, yet fawn over them hypercritically,
Following like a lemming sheep so uncouth, blemished, unwashed,
But back from the brink masters call us,
Eyeing the distant horizon so far,
Who else deserves this, but me?
