Traps of the Mind

Could you hear them, the angels, as they called out your name?

Will they allow what you gave, be remembered?

Our forever’s, so heartfelt, things never the same,

Fly too high, looking back at life’s embers,

Special knowledge, left behind, understood by so many,

Impersonated but still never yet mastered,

Behind bars, all alone, did you struggle any?

As the screams of the crowd go unanswered,

So, to ground, you achieve, in a casket of hope,

Millions stare but the mass unbelieving,

Favoured more than the mast of the slippery slope,

With a gathering storm ever grieving,

Still to rise like a Phoenix, no flame can hold you back,

Or temptation of illicit life’s gain,

Hot tin roof, scalded cat, in an old run-down shack,

Feigning anger, moving out through the pain,

Of a Pastor’s kind words, like the Devil may care,

Through the echoes of time, we still hear,

Eternally, one and only, becoming ever aware,

As the shackles of life disappear,

To be popular is a gas but to everyone’s taste,

Is the standard by which all this is measured,

Through the annuls of time, a lineage traced,

And the past of all memories treasured,

All alone do you stand on a pedestal high?

Relevant as the day you were born,

Loved today just as much as all times that’s gone by,

Bringing comfort to the sad and forlorn.

Beautiful, I’m an atheist and I believe in angels and this is a really nice poem, inspiring.

    • Thank you very much. I actually wrote the piece some months ago following a request from a friend for me to write about Elvis Presley.

I don’t know if that adds any context to it?

In any case, I am so glad you enjoyed it.

      Thanks again.
