Don’t Play That Song Again

Here I am at a get together. Everything’s going fine.
Thought I was late getting here, but seems I’m on time.

The D.J. plays a song. Now I’m taken a-back.
Anything, but this song. Why did he do that?

This song creates many memories…a love I once had.
Like a time machine here I am visiting my own past.

There she is in a beautiful dress. Look at her, she’s so adorned!
“When your mother created you, oh good grief; a star was born!”

She’s responds, “You’re my sun, moon, stars…my whole world!
This is so wonderful! I’m so blessed to be called your girl.”

Now I see me putting a promise ring on her finger.
She’s crying, not only by this, but by the words of the singer.

Standing there and seeing this. I am frozen in time.
Tears steady falling as I say, “This girl was mine.”

The song is now over. I snap back into reality.
People are staring, pointing, looking, asking what’s wrong with me.

Oh I’m okay, I was taken a-back just then.
I just have one request D.J., “Don’t play that song again.”

  1. “That song” to me is undoubtedly “Blame Game” by Kanye West. Every time it comes on, the memories leak, and so does the stress that comes with them. I totally get where you’re coming from, and I admire your ability to bring me into your world this way. Thanks for sharing, brother 🙂

    Always find myself reminiscin’ back.

    Thank you for this one.

    • Thank you! Just one of those things when I wanted to capture a moment on how it feels when a certain song comes as you reminisce. I was looking for a way to write this, as if living in the moment. Glad it came out the way it did. Appreciate ya!
