The Victims Of Suicide

Can you hear their cries? Each minute another will die.
Graveyards are filling up; all the victims of suicide.

Once a man was loved; betrayed by his girlfriend.
She promised to never leave him. A promise broken again.

No longer takes the pain. He makes his move today.
With a gun in hand he shoots. He took his life away.

Instead of fighting the pain, he chose another route.
Instead of fighting the pain, he chose an easy way out.

They’re jumping off the bridge. They’re slitting their own wrist.
They’re shooting themselves dead. Now what is wrong with this?

They hang, burn, shoot, stab and injure themselves too.
They believe the voice that says, “Give it up. You are through.”

Listen….

Life can be so hard. You often cry in bed.
Instead of facing the day, you wanna give up instead.

Death stares at you often. You feel the fear inside.
Instead of standing up to it, you often run and hide.

You’re bullied on the streets. So you run to the internet.
Only to find trolls and bullies contributing to this mess.

You seek for only happiness. Take pills to help you sleep.
But in your dreams, they’re there. It’s leaving you so weak.

Don’t know who to trust. Seems all wants you dead.
Your spirit wants to fight, but you’d rather give up instead.

You can choose your own happiness. Be all that you could be.
Bullies, trolls…forget them all! They’ll soon be under your feet.

What can’t kill you defiantly will make you stronger.
You still have breath. You can do it, just hold on longer.

Think of them that took their lives. Was it all self hate?
I really don’t know, but this I do….sadly, it’s too late.

Turn that hatred into love, even if they despise you.
Set your own sails and let love pull you through.

Can you hear their cries? Each minute another will die.
Graveyards are filling up. Don’t be a victim of suicide.

You are loved.

  1. Great poem Jarid! It’s a battle as old as time and having friends certainly helps!

    • Thanks PT! Unfortunately, the first part of this poem is a true story. My bestie’s dad committed this act. When she told me this, I was inspired to write this poem and because so many out there are doing this. Just wanted to be a voice of hope. Appreciate your comments!

  2. This should be shared on so many levels, especially since it’s been an issue as old as time for sure, but incredibly more relevant today. I appreciate what you’re going for here, Jarid. People do need to hear that it’s okay to feel vulnerable with their closest friends. Relevant piece, and a well-written one at that. Excellent stuff.

    • CY, I once had a friend I considered a sister to me. She often spoke of suicide and attempted it. One day I found out she died and I suspect she succeeded this time. Things like this can hit so close to home. I think of those who were talked out of it and went on to be a success and even help others who were suicidal. This is a touchy and somewhat personal subject for me, but feel it needs to get out there. Maybe it will help someone. Always appreciate your support bro.

    • Rome, I’m sorry. I know you’ve been through a lot…we both have. Just know, you always have a friend and poetry brother in me.

  3. Isn’t the statistic 84 men aged 18-34 commit suicide every week? Its so important to talk about this! So important, for people who feel this way to know we know how they feel and also that it’s okay to feel this way and to want some help. Excellent poem, touches on extremely important and relevant areas of life.

    • Not sure, but it is a lot. Very heartbreaking. Thanks for reading and commenting!
