The Spawn

Giving birth was worse than any nightmare she ever had.
The spawn came much earlier than planned.

Laid out on an operating table.
A strange surgeon holding two lives in their hands.

She was cut open and put on display.
In the hospital, it was just another day.

The room was cold and sterile.
They drugged her but on the inside
she felt feral.

Like an animal,
she just wanted to scream and run loose.
She couldn’t move.

Numb from the waist down.
She couldn’t even feel the tiny human
as it exited her own body.

The alien like figure cried when they
cut and released him from the mangled cord.
The whole situation was too much to absorb.

Hyped up on the anesthetic
she felt pathetic.

She should be more excited about the birth
of her offspring.
She wasn’t expecting a premature delivery
or the complications it brings.

She waited for this moment all her life.
Here it is and motherhood has already
caused her strife.

Being a mother was always part of her plan.
She took care of herself while she was pregnant.
Yet, it all went wrong.
She didn’t understand.

Was she being punished for something?
Was it somehow her fault?

She caught a glimpse of the munchkin.
Seconds later, the baby was gone.

She knew where they were going.
That it would be a long journey
to come home for a little one that
can’t even breathe on his own.

It would be a fight for him to survive.
But she knew from the moment she looked
in her son’s eyes that he would thrive.

Despite the horror of his birth.
It earned it’s worth.

Meeting her son was the best thing
to happen to her.
His birth is now just a memory to her,
a blur.

She’s grateful for her son and
lets him know all the time.
Giving birth was a nightmare
but everything turned out fine.
