Masks

I look through my pile of masks.

Which one should I put on today?

In this world, you get punished,

mocked for showing your real face.

Happiness, joy, acting like you care.

Everyone wears a mask.

Some people, like me, wear more than one.

hiding my true self behind tall black walls.

I’ve done this for so long.

Building more and more walls.

I don’t remember my true self.

What happens when you’re home alone, in the dark?

Do you take off your mask or

keep it on in hopes of tricking yourself?

Into actually being happy, full, with no bottomless pit in you.

No one knows what I have

personally gone through.

My mask is perfectly made.

But I can’t change my eyes.

I don’t stare at people for long, in case

they see something dark and twisted in them.

  1. At a point our masks can become indistinguishable from true identity. True identity may even cease to exist. I’ve fallen into this trap as well. Maybe what your putting on is not a mask, but a face. This is true for myself, I’d love to hear more about what is true for you.

  2. Extremely relatable piece of writing!
I believe we’ve all with a mask, or two, in our day.

In fact, I’ve worn a couple this week.
    Well done!
