Reborn

They’ve called me an imposter, tragedy,
claiming as I do the body’s cells,
drawing as I do the body to its end.
But now you know I’m part of a harmony.
Perhaps you’ve never had such a friend.
I’ve also claimed your pushing away
others, your superior condescending eye,
your numb perception, stem of a numb day,
compelling you to confront your enemy,
fear, whose contours comfort and health had not shown.
When I claimed your cells, what you dismissed out of hand,
blossomed into worlds of their own.
I shed your procrastination, delay,
showing your anger at the harm done to you,
was more pettiness at play…
Your estranged friend was estranged no more;
the friendship you had grew deeper than before.
Before me, you hadn’t known how much
was quietly wearing you away, the time outworn.
Your helplessness and I
helped you to be reborn.
