The Reaper’s Lullaby

Leave your load and live where there is love and laughter, lush,
Hear the lucid lullabies from lutists, low and hushed,
Let your labors leave you, love, the chariot’s lilting low,
Allow the list’ning lodestar to illuminate the road.

Surrender stinging sorrows to the safety of the stars
I’ll sing you simple songs that say serenity is ours,
Asleep ‘neath supple starlight soft, a silent story start,
A strong and stoic safeguard of the secrets in your heart.

Far away from fright, my darling, fleeing from the fear,
Find facilitating freedom, love, you’ll find no fighting here.
This fortress free of fire, full of fireflies and fate,
Free your fighting feelings, let forbidden tears escape.

Lay your heavy head into the haven of my arms,
A home that’s free of hurting, a harbor hid from harm.
I’ll hug you and I’ll hold you, love, I’ll hold your hurting hands,
I’ll hide you from the hurt, from the hellish, harsh demands.

Surrender stinging sorrows to the safety of the stars,
I’ll sing you simple songs that say serenity is ours,
Asleep ‘neath supple starlight soft, a silent story start,
A strong and stoic safeguard of the secrets in your heart.

  1. I already posted this about two days ago, under the title, “A Simple Song of Safety”, but I went back and revised it and completely reconstructed it, now writing from the viewpoint of Death. It was so wildly different from the first draft I decided to simply delete the previous poem and repost with the revisions. I’m much happier with this result, and just proud of the poem all around. It started as an experiment with Alliteration, but ended up something I worked on for many hours. Anyway, enjoy “The Reaper’s Lullaby”.

  2. I love stories that are told from Death’s perspective. Great rhyme and alliteration too!

  3. A fine, first letter funfest. Good work with a different form.
