Hidden Secrets of the Tortoise Shell: A Slow-Moving Tortoise Story

Did you know, that there is a whole world of secrets hidden inside the tortoise shell?

I have always wondered what kind of secrets tortoises keep in there and how they managed to beat the hare.

Tortoises are mysterious.
They spark my curiosity.
They are slow but always get things done.
Where else do you find creatures like them in the animal kingdom?

I tried to peak one time.
To get a good look inside my tortoise’s shell.
He just looked at me like “what the hell?”

It was too hard to tell what he had inside.
I decided it was probably wise NOT to give it another try.

My tortoise got really mad at me for trying to be a snoop.
I told my tortoise sorry.
He happily obliged.
He knows I treat him well and feed him with the finest salads around.

So instead of peaking again.
I asked my tortoise friend what he keeps in his shell.

My tortoise didn’t talk back, of course.
Because tortoises don’t talk.
I may be a goof but I’m not crazy.

I asked my tortoise to tell me anything and everything he had learned in his life, so far.
What kinds of things he ponders.

He looked at me and rolled his eyes.
I knew right then he would never give any of his secrets away.

I finally took the hint and decided to leave him be.
I will never know all of his tortoise complexities.

My tortoise is wise.
He’s learned a lot in 99 years.
He belonged to my great-grandpa and was handed down to me.
Tortoises live long lives and have outlived most everyone in our family.

I wish I knew the secret to how tortoises live so long.
They are wise old creatures that remind me of dinosaurs.
They are slow-moving reptiles that make me smile.

My tortoise pet has learned a thing or two in his life.
I realize now he will never give his secrets away.
I’ll always be left wondering, what in the world they keep in their shells?

Stacks of The New Yorker would be a good guess.
But I wouldn’t place a bet.

I will just admire tortoises like I always have.
Try to live like a tortoise.
Take life one day at a time and have no regrets.
Along the way, I won’t forget to stop and enjoy a salad.
