The Blessing Turned Savage

Pulled further and further away
From the lifeless body, he found himself
Alone with the luminous,
Looking into her quiet eyes,
Life events unfurling within her eyes.
The cancer had eaten away
At the stomach’s lining, cutting short
The body’s life many years, following
A path he had cut for himself.
People had flowed into his life
and he kept aloof or closed his gates.
Some called out to him but he didn’t answer.
Places and faces called out, the luminous,
The wide world called out, the luminous
And he kept withdrawn, confined himself
To a corner of interests, a lovely few
Who flew off in different directions, or died.
Growing older and pride too
Proved hardened clay. The aging observer,
The assessor from afar, was left alone.
He had presumed to shirk
entanglements, pain. It didn’t work.
He tried to hide away. All the love
Meant to flow freely into the world,
The best, most beautiful in him
Had begun with whisperings, gentle prodding,
Voices visiting his dreams like thistledown,
Messages darkening a crimson
Into warnings – numerous, none heeded.
Love meant to flow freely, outward,
Neglected, unacknowledged, turned fiercely
Inward, the blessing turned savage
ravaging the body.
