Within Reason

They tell us we are free to speak,
To dream, to build, to rise, to seek—
Yet every step is bound in chains,
Invisible, but still remains.

They call it order, law, and right,
A guiding hand, a beacon light,
Yet every choice is traced and penned,
A script we follow to the end.

You may go far, but not too wide,
May chase the stars, but not collide—
Your voice may shout, but not too loud,
Stand out too much, you’ll draw the crowd.

They whisper, “Go on, live your way,”
Yet pull the strings to make you sway.
Your freedom’s here, but just in name,
A gilded cage dressed up in fame.

Do what you wish, but know the line,
Step out of bounds—now that’s a crime.
For freedom’s real, but with a twist,
It only lives if they permit.

So walk the path, but heed the call,
You’re free to run, but not to fall.
Do as you will, but know the season—
You’re free to live—within reason.
