Daddy Please Don’t Cry

Image may contain: 1 person, sitting

Looking at your picture. Tears now fill my eyes.
I hate when this happens…our daughter sees me cry.

She hugs me, she says to me, “Mother’s been taken home.
Daddy, please don’t cry, both you and I must carry on.”

It’s been minutes even hours and the days don’t help too.
Looking at her, she looks at me, she knows I’m missing you.

That fateful day two years ago the doctor told you the news.
You tried to hide it, but couldn’t. Something was wrong with you.

I asked what was wrong. Wouldn’t stop till you gave an answer.
“It’s my worst fear. Just found out that I have cancer!”

Tell me it’s a lie!

Lord above, why?!

Refuse to believe the fact
that my wife’s about to die!

Do you remember when we met? You stole my very heart.
Day and night we spent together. Nothing could tear us apart!

Do you remember when we married and had our daughter after?
Remember? Do you remember?! Don’t let it end with this cancer!

We spent so many days together. We had so much fun.
We’d dance the night away, living it up while getting drunk.

We’d wrestle, joke, laugh and sing.

Remember way back when?

Had so much fun then.

I sit and reminisce.

Then along came our daughter. She’s such a beautiful girl.
She’s your heavenly angel and to me she’s daddy’s girl.

Talking to your picture, I clutch my heart and begin to cry.
“My wife! My beautiful wife, why oh why you had to die?!”

She hugs me, she says to me, “Mother’s been taken home.
Daddy, please don’t cry, both you and I must carry on.”

Oh child, sweet child of mine! How much I do love you!
My heart, my soul, my world you are! Anything I’d do for you.

Oh child, sweet child of mine! You look just like your mother!
No one could take her place, I swear never to love another!

Oh child, sweet child of mine! I know I can make it through.
You’ll be there every step of the way, we’ll see each other through.

She looks at me, she tells me, “To death I have no answer why.
We’ll both see mother again, so daddy, please don’t you cry.”

  1. That was simply beautiful Jarid! It’s clear to see how you poured every ounce of your heart and soul into this and the emotion is superb!

    • Thank you much! This is a fictional story, but the emotions I poured out in this was taking on that character of this father. I had to become the father to get these emotions out. I appreciate your feedback and thank you for recognizing what I was trying to do with this piece. Means a lot!

Wow, that was beautiful. You’re a wonderful writer.

  3. Such a heartwrenching piece of writing.
    Death is never easy..

    The thought turns my stomach.
Yet, you write the experience with such compassion.

    Well done, J-rid!

    • I’ve never personally experienced this, that’s where channeling my inner voice comes in. Glad it came out good enough to touch you. Thank you much brother.

  4. Please tell me this isn’t true. I thought at first it was a couple splitting g up but it only got sadder. You expressed the raw emotions of one who hears this dreadful news perfectly.

    • It isn’t a true story. It’s something I made up. I try to pour as much emotion as I can when it comes to poetry like this. Appreciate your comments!
