Sleep Tight

You know you’re a universe, right?

Hmm?

There are more stars in the galaxy than all the grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth.

And there are more atoms in one grain of sand than all the stars in the galaxy.

I had been happily somnambulant and had been jerked out of my reverie

by this passerby.

Do I know I’m a what?

A universe.

Oh…Yes I do…I had forgotten. So what of it?

Doesn’t that seem profound to you?

Do I know you? What do you want.

You named me Severus, remember?

OH YES! It’s been a while.

He stared at me intently, as if through a cheap telescope

and scraped the ground at my feet.

What do you intend?

Well I was in the middle of a neat dream

but I’ve forgotten it now.

He smiled and I realized how much I had missed him.

He took my arm and we strolled…honest to god

strolled along the park path

and stopped to admire the pond

with its infinite breathing living dying

birthing killing changing in dynamic and miraculous ways

I couldn’t breathe it was so incredible.

I felt the suns light waves blast against my skin

the air molecules bombarded me

I was being renewed and destroyed and renewed again

in the span of a second

I was a vibration on a heavenly guitar

waiting for the string to stop pulsing

I was alive inside an infinite life

I was exalted, sweating and heaving of breath.

He turned and  looked at me with amusement

I swear he looked just like Leonard Cohen and said

we should do this more often.

  1. Please forgive me for laughing in concluding, but perhaps blame it on my alleged dry sense of humor. Tell me there wasn’t a subtle thread of humor waltzing through your lines. It was that those last two lines which caught me up short and culled laughter when I was intently trying to cipher what was. Thank you for sharing.

  2. honestly, i don’t know what to say, but not because i don’t have much to say, but because there’s too much… this was quite a journey for me.. & because i believe there’s much more behind this than i can understand, i can only thank you for this experience 🙂
