A child’s mistake

Boy so young, a vicar’s son, his only pride and joy,
Hard working child, never wild, a friend to everyone.
Choir rejoice, an angels voice, devoted to his church,
An honest guy, would never lie, responsibility never foist.
A sporty lad, football mad, team player in every way,
Never late, would always wait, in his heart, there was no bad.

A summers day, kids at play, a mid week day at school,
Last bell rings, front door swings, children make their way.
With his mates, he’s out the gate, arranging when to meet,
A silly gag, rucksack grabbed, a friend makes one mistake.
Screeching sound, he looks around, the vehicle cannot stop,
Sickening sight, boy takes flight, then crashes to the ground.

Unable to breath, I can’t perceive, I’m frozen to the spot,
Not a sound, a man kneels down, no pulse beneath his sleeve.
Sirens loud, a jacket shroud, covers his lifeless face,
Uniformed men, using pens, questions and a growing crowd.
Not able to speak, my legs go weak, reality hits me hard,
I have to sit, as I get sick, crouched upon on the street.

Massive crowd, gathered round, his small oak box, that day,
Mum and Dad brave, beside his grave, a piper, the only sound.
Whole school cried, right by my side, as the choir began to sing,
Disbelief, and crippling grief, for a friend and son denied.
When I said goodbye, felt like I’d die, as I laid my one white rose,
Many thoughts, of joy he brought, as I knelt and ask god why?

After twenty years, I feel the fear, as if it were yesterday,
I look at his stone, it still hits home, my eyes fill up with tears.
Memories of that boy, him full of joy, walking with his friends,
His bright red hair, skin so fair, and healthy life to be enjoyed.
Remembering the wake, parents heartache, more than I could stand,
I’ll never forget, carry this debt, of when I made that one mistake.
