“i love you,” she said.
‘i need you,’ she meant.
“i love you too,” he said.
‘because it’s convenient,’ he meant.

and they were in love
despite sweaty palms and cold feet,
despite self-doubt and turning blind eyes,
despite a lack of trust,
despite both of them being completely dishonest;
they were in love.

because the alternative was unacceptable.

“i love you,” she said.
‘i need to be loved,’ she meant.
“i love you too,” he said.
‘i want to get laid,’ he meant.
