Between a Rock and a Hard Place

hard lessons learned by trial,
with a whole room for error.
basketball courts replaced by
new players in a court where

losers don’t go home.
learn quick, new adult, or
learn hard.

cartoons replaced by news. Enjoy
the recess outside on the slide, soon
they’ll be no free rides, and they
won’t let you slide.

just be just and honest, or
do what you must. You think
i’m playing but
from the sidelines

i can say can you see
clearer under the stars than
in stripes.

they say, ‘trust me.’ but
uncle sam ain’t no man i can stand. from
sea to shining sea
they’ll ship your ass like grass from
the past –

no warning or mourning. so
be ready freddy, be on the ball paul,

these mountains of majesty are
a travesty, and this land is
in their hand. the seeds of doubt sprout
grains of greed, and the amber waves are

inebriated liberators
crashing and burning like
stocks and bonds into the
neighbor’s pond. How

did we go from Woodstock to
what the fuck? from peace made
bonds to
wartime bombs.
freedom of speech
to ‘out of our reach? ‘

words of parting wisdom, before
we fall apart,
grow up quick and grow up
keen,

’cause there ain’t no room for
in between.
