dream catcher

My dreams of life will never die.
The Indian dream catcher is on my side.
Drugs, poverty, alcohol, will not put me in despair
As long as there are people who really care.
As American Indians we are proud
We will not be put to the ground.
Pride is something that is shown and shared
And as different as the day-something that can’t be hid
This is our way.
We have walked the land with pride in our hearts
And that was just the start.
We gave honor to all that was around
The sun, the sky, the wind, the trees,
It is all part of me.
We learned to hunt and share our food
Not to live in this solitude.
So pick up your heads and walk with pride.
This is our land- a land Devine.
Show our forefathers that we still have our dreams
For that is what was seen by every elder
Of every tribe-that the American Indian will never die.
If the reservation is not for me-then I must be set free.
To follow what our forefathers said-and get out of this rut
And get out of the bed.
If your bed is hard and you cannot sleep
Then it is time for you to take charge of your life
For your children’s sake and your wife
Drugs and alcohol cannot ease the pain.
And put you on the path that’s right.
You have to be willing to stand and fight.
We may have lost the battles- but not the war
We must educate our children so they can see
What was given up for you and me?
I cannot tell you what’s in your heart.
But! I know that this is a start.
Education is the key- it’s the only way we can be set free.
