Evening Skies

I stood in deep and reverent awe
And looked upon those evening skies,
A rich and seamless sea of gold
That filled the heavens above.

As shadows fell so long and dark
And crept across the grassy field,
Then slowly melted to the night
That still September’s eve.

The trees that touched the calming hues
As autumn silhouettes they rose,
Beyond the solemn foreground
As they framed that peaceful scene.

A breathless hush descended
With the setting of the distant sun,
As fingered rays before me shone
Then faded to the stars.
