GLORIOUS INNOCENCE

Theirs was a glorious innocence
those lads who went to war.
To fight upon a foreign field
they’d never seen before.

Jim McLean, a farmer’s son,
just eighteen and a half.
A strapping lad with an open face,
who liked to joke and laugh.

Young Jim fell, saving a mate
on their very first campaign.
Through a hail of fire he carried Bob,
till a bullet shattered his brain.

He wasn’t to know Bob was dead
when he tried to rescue him.
Such was the glorious innocence
of a farmer’s son named, Jim.
