We drove for hours,
beyond even the low stone cottages
that dotted the rolling landscape.
Sitting on a gentle slope
in the weak spring sunshine –
surrounded by a purple carpet of heather.
Deeper hues of distant mountains
compete with azure skies
washed with wispy clouds.
The only sound, the breeze
caressing my cheek
and the far-off tinny clang
of a sheep’s bell.
