I asked the priest.
“To worship, kneel in awe.
To know that God is
Everything and more.”

I asked the rich.
“To earn. Make money.
Amass great wealth.
Then carry on using the National Health.”

I asked the doctor.
“To exercise. Control your urges.
Never go on any splurges.
For it’s healthy you must stay.
Though you will drop dead anyway.”

I asked the scientist.
“To find out the fact
simply for it’s own sake.
To never mind the toll
that the result may take.”
“What is the meaning of life?”
I asked the poet.
“To live. To be, imperfectly. To know.
To follow the heart and mind.
To set a seed of truth and see it grow.”
