Respect the elderly,
give them their due
for they have loved and fought
and suffered for you.
Acknowledge seniority,
both in years and looks,
ripped dust jackets encase
many good books.
If courtesy was the currency of the world
faith would find each flag unfurled
with no more sinking to our knees
in attempts to unify chalk and cheese
The greatest of truths is
‘thou shalt not judge’
so we can bear dignity
instead of a grudge,
stand aside and
let all come through,
open the door for them,
do something new,
set the example,
bring back the light,
be less political,
be more polite.
If courtesy was currency across the Earth,
we would find treasure in tolerance,
value its worth,
conceiving all wisdom, be there at its birth
and where a handshake could cancel a war
and we call every colour a friend,
Should our currency thus become courtesy,
how much then would we spend?
