One More Dance Just Before October.

One More Dance Just Before October.
If one could form a rhythm
from the crackling of the leaves,
then catch the whistling noises
of the wind’s howl in the eaves.

Add some echoes of leftover
summer wind chimes in the breeze
and staff the giggling eighth notes
of schoolchildren’s joyous glee.

Give a pull on empty clotheslines
tightly twanging from each grope,
recording all the warped sounds
from guitars made of rope.

Throw in some banging shutters
as the storms begin to blow,
with the rat-a-tat of rainy days
on every roof below.

Let the trumpet honks of flocks of geese
join in as they fly south,
blend the chattering of busy squirrels
stuffing acorns in their mouths.

Then one might have a melody
to play back all year long,
the melancholy sadness
of a sweet September song.
