remember him

You remember him, don’t you?
Devil’s Den, the deadly tangle,
Hornet’s Nest, and Bloody Angle,
The Dunker Church a September morn,
Farmer Miller’s field of corn,
Face half buried in sand or mud or snow,
Tossed on Pacific island sand or a French hedge row.
A shattered arm slipping off an oil stained life raft.
Frozen bodies staked like wood at the Chosen reservoir.
One of the 58,112 of that place in Southeast Asia.
A broken body in the desert,
One burned beyond recognition by an IED
One lost in a cave in a remote mountain.

Remember him?

A son full of promise.
Loved, motivated, full of life,
Full of dreams.

Remember him?

No poppies, few parades,
just another day the mailman doesn’t come.
War is bad now so why remember those who fought.
When you walk by a flag and see the red stripes—
Remember him.
