Riddle

I only ever had the one,
and have always been happy with it,
though my father had two,
and my mother (who was the tenth
of eleven children) had three.

My wife has two, though she never
uses one of them,
and we gave our children one each.
Only when they were old enough,
they each trimmed it down,
as if even that single one was too much.

Our grand-daughter, on the other hand,
decided the one she had been given
was not enough,
so she just took another one
without a by-your-leave,
and uses them both quite brazenly.

Riddle me, riddle me, riddle-me-ree,
in case the answer’s not plain to see,
Eliot said a cat should have three.
(Oh yes … and I borrow one, just for poetry.)
