Summer Eve In Kansas City

I step out onto my porch
Light my cigarette
Not doing my health justice
I inhale the toxic smoke
The cicadas sing their droning song
Clinging to tree for life
The sun sets slowly over building top
The trees stand proudly
still green but showing signs of yellow
There is beauty in the city
You have to look all around
The colors mingling vividly
The sound of engines working
Pulling vehicles on gray streets
A warm wind sails through these streets
Carrying the sound of children splashing in a pool
I inhale my toxic smoke again
What wonders I see, hear and barely smell
Beauty is everywhere!
You have to look all around
Why is the beauty often taken for granted?
Why do I notice it?
I love the gifts given to us
I pray that I never take them for granted.
The gray squirrel scurries
collecting what he can
There is beauty in the city
You have to look all around
