The lives of a butterfly

First life, you crawled, across miles of green,

A wake, of destruction, left where you had been.

Each branch, a road, to your next place of rest,

A travel lodge, another place to digest.

With an eating disorder, unable to stop,

You continue to ramble, to find the next shop.

Your body expanded, your skin manifests,

The end of your journey; it was time for a rest.

So you curled in a leaf, you wrapped yourself warm,

Inside a home, that was safe, your place to transform.

Your second life started, breaking free, from your tomb

A brand new body, new life, like a child from a womb.

You felt so different; fragile and small,

No craving for food, no obsession to crawl.

You unfurled your wings, such beauty in sight,

With the feel of the breeze, you took your first flight.

A new sense of mission, a new urge, your fate,

To fly with the wind, and look for a mate.

Now here you are, worn out from your search,

Protecting your young, which you have laid on this birch.
