Unfinished Poem

Recently flashbacks of past memories
of innocence persist:
The cool breeze through a window
(with wispy netted lace)
when I lay in childhood
on a summer’s eve in bed.
The taste of that succulent pear
brought by a dear, dear friend
when I had been in hospital
and not eaten since,
I did not remember when…

The way you clasped this hand
when the movie scared your heart.
The sight of the empty bed
from where my father did depart.
The time she said she would leave me
(but did not keep her word),
that everlasting evening
when nothing else
could penetrate our world.
The tears that fell down your face
when I showed you
this world is so vast a place…

The feeling of invincibility
when teenage dreams collided with reality.
The meeting with eternity
that dissolved the enduring dream
the end of thinking and planning
another predetermined end.
The poem is unfinished
(and that is how it must be)
because to find its end
we can but only wait and see….
