Ode to Jack

A hellish symphony of heart wrenching screams,

Still plague my nights and haunt my dreams.

Forever trapped on that blood stained beach,

White cliffs of home so far from reach.

Stench of death and loss of hope,

Strangle me still like the hangman’s rope.

No way forward and no way back,

Jerry upon us, I hide under Jack.

My dead friend,  brother,  shelter, now saviour,

Should I be here, or should I be braver.

I squeeze his hand and affirm my promise,

I’ll get your letter back to Doris.

Soul full of fear the darkness takes over,

Until I wake on the home cliffs of Dover.

I frantically search for Jack’s last words,

‘It’s safe, I have it’ from my loving Nurse.

Goodbye I wave to my hospital bed,

Delivering my promise to Jack’s beloved.

Her beauty and soul reduced to a quiver,

Her life filled eyes now a flowing river.

Forty years on and the nightmare still lurks,

My guilt escape from Dunkirk.

But Doris and I head on back,

With our firstborn and Grandson Jack.

It’s different now, fresh and clear,

But the fallen ghosts start to appear.

falling to my knees in uncontrollable despair,

I may have escaped but my mind is still there.

Forever trapped on that blood stained beach,

The white cliffs of home so far from reach.
