My Father’s Eyes

Never

Never to be one to ask for forgiveness

Never

Never to be one to wish for love

Never one to beg for mercy,

with eyes fixed,

fixed on the crown above.

Never

Never to be one to be rebuked

Never

Never to be one to turn the cheek

Never one to be under another,

with eyes searching,

searching for the easy and the weak.

Never

Never to be one to delight in innocence

Never

Never to be one to better, only ruin for all

Never was grace sufficient for thee,

eyes always hunting,

hunting for the one to take the fall.

And

After all this time

After all this time

Even after all this time

I still see the world

I still see myself

Through my father’s eyes.

  1. Damn, it’s so hard to never, ever do the things you’re not supposed to.

    • Thanks Eli. Was more about the lord of this world than my real father.

  2. harsh and cold. poetry should evoke that sometimes. a great way to confront the demons. the word Never as a sort of chain…

    • Thanks for reading Gregory. Really about the devil, not my real father, who, was a good man and to quote a lyric that’s not mine, “I still dream of dad even though he died.”

  3. Glad I read your comment, that sheds light on this.
Oh, so happy you had a good man for a father.

    • Thanks Lumiere, of course my father and me had differences & I was never as close to him as my mother, but he was a good, caring man and hard working. I took it for granted that every dad was like that, unfortunately that is not the case.

  4. Sorry for taking so long to respond.
I too am closer to my mother and still am.
