Addiction

Addictions –
to gambling,
to alcohol,
to drugs
are obvious
and obviously
disparaged.

But preoccupation
with self
is another,
the most pernicious
addiction of all,
the dark mother
of division
and isolation.

Trim only
its branches;
pluck and throw away
the poisoned fruits –
but don’t bother so much
about the roots.

Since it’s the norm,
it’s not an addiction
nor insanity.
It is called by respectable names –
such as practicality.
